Did you install this manually from ZIP previously? This looks like a blocked file issue.

Try the removal and reinstall fix. If installing manually, make sure you follow the manual installation instructions precisely, especially the step involved in unblocking the files after extracting them from ZIP.

I installed from the NCrunch_VS2017_3.12.0.15.msi not from the zip.

Once I got these messages on starting VS, I
1. closed VS
2. resinstalled ncrunch ie fixed a broken install of ncrunch,
3. tried this twice ...
4, when I still go the issues,
5. I de-installed ncrunch and reinstalled again from the msi above ...
6. and then posted on this forum ..

JK

Sorry, thanks for confirming this. Could you check if you're able to open the nCrunch.VSIntegration2017.dll using any other tool on your machine? (i.e. even notepad). This error suggests that something is blocking access to this file or one of its dependencies. Are you running a virus scanner or any 3rd party security software?

Also, can you confirm you tried the "devenv.exe /setup" step in the removal+reinstall fix?

VS has an internal cache of extensions that are installed. This cache includes a range of important information about extensions, such as their primary DLL, menu options, etc.

If something didn't go right during installation, it's possible that the cache is out of date. This may be why it's looking for a 3.11 version of nCrunch.VSIntegration rather than the correct version. Running "devenv.exe /setup" will reset the cache and can usually resolve these kinds of problems.

It will run in the background. Wait until it's finished before you try to re-run VS.

I'm having problems when trying to install the version NCrunch_VS2017_3.12.0.15.msi. The Windows is blocking the download saying it contained a virus and was deleted. I'm using the latest Windows 10 version and I don't have any other antivirus than the default Windows Defender Security Center.

Hi,

The onedrive links you've provided above don't seem to work for me (not sure why?). NCrunch has had problems with Windows Smartscreen in the past because of the reputation system used by Smartscreen. Basically, the logic used by the scanner is that if there is a downloadable that hasn't been downloaded by many people, then it is considered suspect and flagged up as a virus. There is unfortunately very little that vendors can do about this sort of thing, you'll need to look into your system configuration to see if you can work around it. There are no viruses in NCrunch.

If you like, you can try the 7-zip downloadable (which will require manual installation). Sometimes this works around the security:

Thank you for the rapid response.

The new file sent is still detected as a virus by windows. I was able to download and install the previous version without any issues. Differently from what Smartscreen used to do in the past, this time the message is being explicit about the existence of a virus "NCrunch_VS2017_3.12.0.15.msi contained a virus and was deleted."

About the OneDrive link, because of the "!" the forum is detecting the end of the link prematurely. I'm pasting the link below. Please, copy the entire line, not just the part which was detected as a link.

You have my assurance that NCrunch does not contain a virus. This is a false positive.

If you like, you can check the results of online services that are able to push the file through a range of different scanners. Virus Total has quite a good one that allows you to scan a file without downloading it.

As a vendor, there is unfortunately very little I can do about false positives. It isn't possible to design a product around virus scanner detection systems, and because NCrunch does a range of things that a scanner would consider suspect (starting processes, manipulating DLLs and PDBs), there will always be a high occurrence of false positives when scanning it.

If there is any option to do so, I suggest overriding Windows Defender to allow the download, or consider downloading it in a different way (i.e. from another machine).

If you can give me the details in the report, I can try to send a False Positive report to MS .. though I am not optimistic on how long it may take them to revise their signatures. Unfortunately copy/pasting the link you've given still doesn't seem to work for me. I get a OneDrive error saying the file is no longer available.

Hi Remco and NCrunch Team,

Sorry to bother you again with this topic but I was able to come with some new information. The, likely, false positive detection indicated the Trojan:Win32/Sprisky.U!cl.

Considering that, probably, I'm not the only person which is getting this kind of warning, and that I'm one of the ones it's sharing it, I hope that I can help this amazing product in some way.

Thanks for sharing these extra details. I've submitted both the VS2017 and VS2015 installers to MS as false positives. I'm not sure how soon they will respond on this, or if they will respond at all. I recommend making sure you have your Windows Defender definitions up-to-date. According to the online submission system, the scanner seems to conclude that neither of these installers have malware. Perhaps their online scanner is different, or they've recently updated the definitions? This is using definition version 1.259.1.0

This week I was able to install the version without any false positive detection by windows defender. Thank you for your support and attention.

Great to hear! But if thanks are involved, they're probably better due to MS rather than myself. It seems they've fixed the definitions :)
