Ncrunch is asking for not needed references

I am trying to build my VB.NET solution for the first time with CRUNCH and running into an issue where on one of the projects NCRUNCH complains of missing references
One of the references is another project in the same solution - adding the references does not eliminate an error and project builds without that reference fine in VS 2012
Another reference is Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.ExceptionManagement which does not even exists in GAC on my development machine and is not used by any of the projects in the solution

Visual Studio Premium 2012 builds the solution with no problems

Hi, thanks for sharing this issue.

Could you share any more specific details about the errors you're receiving? I've wondering if this may be related to a separate build target running inside the project. Try setting your 'Log Verbosity' global configuration setting to 'Detailed' and examining the trace log inside the Processing Queue Window for the project failing to build. This usually contains a full build log with more detailed information about the errors.

Something also worth trying is to put the engine in compatibility mode to see if there is a setting that will solve this for you - http://www.ncrunch.net/documentation/troubleshooting_compatibility-mode.

i followed your suggestions by setting the solution in compatibility mode and changing log property to "Detailed". It produced a huge file. i do not see a way to attach a document to a post so I am just coping first part. not sure how helpful it will be. Please let me know how i can provide more specific info.

Thanks. Is there any chance you could submit the entire log through the contact form? You can zip it up and attach it if the file is very large.

Something else worth trying is to troubleshooting the project file NCrunch has generated for this project in its workspace.

Try the following:

1. Right click on the failed build inside the Tests Window
2. Go to Advanced->Browse to workspace
3. Find the generated .vbproj file in the workspace
4. Open up the file, take a look a it. Note that NCrunch will have adjusted the project references and replaced them with assembly references
5. Open a command prompt next to the file. Try running MSBuild.exe against the file
6. Take note of any errors. Do you see the same results as when NCrunch builds the project?

Note that you can freely change the generated file in the workspace and re-run MSBuild as necessary to troubleshoot the build and work out which dependency is causing the problem. When you're done, you can just reset the NCrunch engine and it will clear/rebuild the workspace.

I believe I figured out a problem.

Following your suggestion i tried executing a build directly through msbuild.exe and realized that it is using VS 2015 MSBuild instead of 2012 and failing with the same errors as NCrunch build.
Pulling up the project in Visual Studio 2015 showed me all of the same errors. I think it is possible that NCrunch build the solution using 2015 msbuild even thought the solution is 2012. Correct me if i am wrong of course, but getting the solution work in 2015 and running NCrunch worked and build all of the projects

Thanks for sharing the solution to this. What you've described is not actually the intended behaviour in NCrunch. NCrunch will always use the version of MSBuild that ships with the version of VS currently loaded. However, it does this via the MSBuild API, and I have noticed that the VS2015 release seemed to rewire a few things in MSBuild itself. If VS2015 has implicitly redirected the VS2012 version of MSBuild into VS2015, there likely won't be much NCrunch can do to force the correct version.

When running msbuild.exe against the project, did you use the one from VS2012 or the one from VS2015?
