Unit tests dont complete

Hi

I have go the projects building within NCrunch but am unable to get any of the unit tests to complete. They just sit there with Running(first time run) and never complete.

Currently I have ignored all unit tests except one which is a dummy:

[TestMethod]
public void DummyTest() {
Assert.IsTrue(true, "working");
}

and this does not complete either.

I've set logging to verbose but nothing is in the output window in VS to indicate what the hang might be.

I'm unable to submit a bug report as it appears that feature doesn't work behind a proxy, is there a way of getting the report out without directly submitting it? (or enabling proxy support) ?
Any ideas as to where I can look to see why the tests don't complete?

Hi,

Thanks for reporting this issue. Most likely the engine is throwing an exception under the hood, so we'll need to find out what this is. As the bug reporter is failing, the best way to get information about the problem is to go to your NCrunch global configuration and turn on the 'LogToOutputWindow' setting. If you then reset the engine so that your test kicks off, you should see the exception appear either in the Visual Studio output window OR in the processing queue against the test execution task. If the failure doesn't show, try setting your LogVerbosity to detailed and see if you can notice anything unusual in the log (i.e. errors, exceptions, etc). If you're able to copy/paste me the details I should be able to identify the reason for failure.

Thanks for the response, have set the settings to output and detailed and have pasted below. There is an exception in there about strong name verification failing, however I have put in a *.* suppression to the machine so I'm not sure either why its failing to sign the assembly in the first place nor why the suppression is failing. The solution is delay signed and there is an error in the log referring to a failure to re-sign. Does this look like the issue to you too?

Thanks for posting these details. I noticed something odd in the log file when NCrunch tries to sign your output test assembly:

Failed to extract public key from key pair -- Bad Version of provider.

Can you give me any details about the manner in which this assembly is normally signed? Did you generate the key file yourself or is it sourced from anywhere?

NCrunch manipulates output assemblies in such a way that would normally cause strong name verification to fail - so if your assembly is signed, NCrunch will re-sign it using the strong name tool (sn.exe). It looks as though for some reason the sn.exe tool is rejecting the key that NCrunch has been identifying for signage. If you use the sn.exe tool yourself to re-sign a built assembly with your key file, does the signing succeed?

I saw that and can recreate if I try and re-sign with the public key. I guess you cant resign with a public key? We have the public key on the development workstations but the private key is not available to the developers, it is applied during the build on the build servers. We have the assemblies registered for suppression so I don't understand why NCrunch cant load them.

The key file is one that was generated by us a long time ago, its only the public part which is available to us now though.

This would make good sense. At the moment NCrunch doesn't support working with partially signed assemblies, though there are a number of workarounds for this.

One way to solve this would be to try turning off signing of the assemblies for your NCrunch builds. You can do this by making the SignAssembly build property conditional in each of your project files with this problem.

For example, your project files will likely contain the code:

<PropertyGroup>
<SignAssembly>true</SignAssembly>
</PropertyGroup>

Try changing this to:

<PropertyGroup>
<SignAssembly Condition="$(NCrunch) != '1'">true</SignAssembly>
</PropertyGroup>

You may need to do this for most (or all) of the project files in your solution.

I'm keen to hear if this does the trick.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it (we were already using this for the code analysis issues we were having) but unfortunately we would need code changes to support the unsigned assemblies. I guess if there is a compiler conditional that NCRUNCH puts in place for its compilation we could use that for working around the problem but I can't see a way of it working at the moment.

Understood. NCrunch doesn't yet have a build definition set automatically, but you can set one yourself using the $(NCrunch) environment variable in your .proj files, for example:

<PropertyGroup Condition=" '$(NCrunch)' == '1' ">
<DefineConstants>NCRUNCH;DEBUG;TRACE</DefineConstants>
</PropertyGroup>

This needs to be below your debug platform configuration so that it will take precedence with the DefineConstants property.

Then in code ...

#if NCRUNCH
... Place NCrunch specific code here
#else
... Place non-NCrunch specific code here
#endif

Well thanks very much. following your suggestions I did indeed manage to get the code compiling and running unit tests in parallel with the development and it is running for me.
