Hi Remco,

Summary: NCrunch might be automatically setting the default browser to Firefox repeatedly.

I'm working on a project that requires the customer to use IE8 and therefore I need to test with IE8.

In Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate with NCrunch 2.18.03 installed:

I right-clicked an ASPX page.
I selected Browse With...
I selected Internet Explorer.
I clicked on Set as Default.
I clicked on Cancel.

I click on Start Debugging...

VS starts IE8 and I'm happily off and running testing my app.

I installed Ncrunch 2.19.0.4.

I click on Start Debugging...
VS2010 starts the web app with Firefox.
I stopped VS and then did the above steps to set IE as the default browser.

Immediately after closing the Browse With... dialog I open Browse With... dialog.

I see the default browser is set to back to Firefox.

I repeated these steps several times and I can't get VS2010 to keep IE as the default browser.

I can't run my web app and test with IE since something is resetting the default browser back to FF.

I uninstalled NCurnch 2.19.04 and then installed NCrunch 2.18.03.

Now I'm able to select Internet Explorer as the default browser and it stays set as the default browser.

Apparently there is a known problem with VS2010 and setting the default browser.

Thanks, Ed

Hi Ed,

Thanks for sharing this issue.

To be honest, I'm not sure where to start on diagnosing such a problem. NCrunch has no browser integration of any kind, and it's debugging support extends only to telling VS to attach to a .EXE process (there are no settings changes).

If this is happening in your environment, it's likely to be another application changing your browser in response to unrelated changes in your environment. When NCrunch installs into VS, it clears the VS extension cache so that the IDE can find its package and correctly load it. It may be possible that there is a bug in VS (or one of its packages) that is doing something to your browser settings in response to your extension cache being cleared. Unfortunately I do not have the capability to analyse such a problem.

Is it worth checking your tests to see if any of them may be executing code that causes this?
